Celebrate Habitot’s 26th Birthday and Earth Day this week by making pretend desserts and foods using natural materials! Making pretend food can encourage dramatic play. In dramatic play, children use their imaginations freely, practice problem-solving as well as social skills, and work through emotions. These activities and materials are simply suggestions – add other environmentally-friendly, natural, and reusable materials to further play!
(SAFETY: Pretend food and drink should never be consumed! Supervise children, especially if they’re still putting things in their mouths. Review this list of plants that can be poisonous for young children before collecting materials.)
(COLLECTING PLANTS: Remember, no collecting is permitted in regional parks. Here’s a list of endangered plants in CA that may not be collected. Interestingly, there are no laws prohibiting the collection of California poppies as long as they’re on private property.)
(NOTE ABOUT MUD: Not all dirt can easily be turned into mud. Potting soil or typical garden soil don’t work well. Heavier clay soil and dirt under grass (yard or wild) are usually a good bet.)
Create smaller desserts and more pretend food with mud and natural materials – perfect for sharing! Swap out the plastic flower pot or the large yogurt container for an egg carton, an old muffin tin, small cups, or paper muffin liners. Follow steps 1-5 above, or add your own “ingredients” and special twists.
(SAFETY: With children under 3, you can omit the water (so it’s not consumed) and just fill cups with flowers and leaves. Young children can still practice breaking up the flowers with a stick, a long stone, or a spoon.)
